Who's Cribbing ?

In my science fiction class, my teacher handed out a packet of short stories that our class had to read. The one that I want to talk about is; "Who's Cribbing"? by Jack Lewis. Jack Lewis is an upcoming writer who is desperately trying to get his literary works published. The only problem is the publishing companies believe that he his plagiarizing Todd Thromberry. The bizarre thing is, Jack Lewis has never heard of this 'Todd Thromberry' so he keeps resending his work to other publishing companies. Of course they say the same thing, " As you no doubt know, it was the great Todd Thromberry who wrote the story you tried to pass of on us as an original" (Doyle P. Gates). This short story is in a letter format. In the end, this Todd Thromberry is the one who is plagiarizing Jack Lewis' work and is going through time to make move it seem like the other way around.  At the same time, I was thinking while I was reading this short story was, why would anyone take that much time to plagiarize someone else's work, to make it seem like that person was plagiarizing them? I guess this is a true Science Fiction story because hopefully in reality, that would never happen. The main theme and message of "Who's Cribbing"? is Technology can be use for pointless purposes, and Todd Thromberry is using technology for a pointless purpose.

  2. No, silly. This story is about the unfortunate phenomenon that when you write something original, often you find the exact same thing written decades earlier by some famous person! It FEELS like this person had a time machine and plagiarized you, but it's really you independently rediscovering their work. This feeling is universal to anyone doing creative work, that the famous person had a time machine and plagiarized you, when it's not true at all. So this author wrote a funny story about "what if that really happened?"
